Our elementary class is spending some time this month and next visiting some of the non-profits in our area, to learn about service work and the ways in which we can contribute to our community. We started this series of explorations at the Humane Society, where we spent some time teaching a puppy her name and holding the many kitties there up for adoption.
This week, the students visited Dig In! Community Garden in Yancey County, where they helped to plant garlic. Dig In! provides produce to the Yancey county food pantry at Reconciliation House and we are hoping to do a similar project next year here in Mitchell County, with plans to expand our garden. In preparation for this project, students will visit Shepherd's Staff food pantry this afternoon and help stock the shelves with a shipment from Manna Food Bank.
The students have also decorated Christmas ornaments to be sold at Habitat for Humanity, where the proceeds from these ornament sales will go directly towards the organization, to benefit people who need homes. Please go by the store and purchase one to take home-- the students will be hanging them in a window display next Tuesday!
